PROVIDING EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES TO THE MOUNT DESERT COMMUNITY SINCE 1938
911 Emergency Response
NEHA provides 911 Emergency Medical Services to the Town of Mount Desert (villages of Hall Quarry, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor, Somesville, Otter Creek); coverage also includes a large portion of Acadia National Park. Additionally, NEHA providers intercept & transport for the Cranberry Islands. NEHA regularly assists other agency on Mount Desert Island through mutual aid agreements.
In partnership with Mount Desert Island Hospital (Bar Harbor, ME), NEHA provides non-emergency transport to any resident or guest of Mount Desert. This includes transfers to specialty care hospitals throughout Maine. Other non-emergency transports can be prearranged through our business office.
As part of the Island's emergency response plan, NEHA regularly assists other agencies with dedicated standbys during high-risk events. NEHA also provides medical standby on-request at private events where EMS presence is warranted. To schedule a private event standby, please contact our business office.
Originally known as the Northeast Harbor Fire Company, NEHA has been providing emergency medical care since 1938. During a transition to a municipal-based fire-service in 2001, the EMS component separated and became IRS recognized as a 501(c)3 organization. NEHA is governed by an elected Board of Directors and staffed by a volunteer membership.
NEHA maintains Maine State EMS licensure at the Advanced Life Support level. Two paramedic-level ambulances are stationed in Northeast Harbor at the Mount Desert Public Safety building. NEHA regularly interfaces with partner organizations:
NEHA's staff is a combination of volunteers on-call and per-diem providers. EMS providers are licensed as EMTs, Advanced EMTs, Paramedics, and Community Paramedics. Membership is open to all interested individuals, regardless of EMS training or licensing. NEHA provides all required education.
Community outreach includes regular American Red Cross blood drives, health & safety screenings, CPR classes, and educational presentations. Each August, NEHA sponsors a 5-mile road race & family fun walk to as service-fundraising.
